Internships at Pakistan Mission

We have limited internship opportunities. Internship offers are accepted on a no numeration and first-come-first-serve basis.

The internship program is designed to provide a mutually beneficial relationship between the Mission and the prospective interns.

The internship allows you to take a closer look at multilateral diplomacy in action as well as familiarization with important aspects of Pakistan's foreign policy. It offers you opportunities to explore career paths in diplomacy, Foreign Service, public policy and beyond.

Currently, the Mission is considering internships in these thematic areas: Development issues including sustainable development, climate change and environmental issues, human rights, humanitarian affairs, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, peacekeeping/peacebuilding, and international public economic and trade laws. The UN architecture, programs and processes.

We are particularly interested in candidates currently pursuing studies or aspiring a career in international relations, diplomacy, foreign policy and public policy etc.

Requirements

Application should be accompanied by a Cover Note, which may not exceed 2500 letters. Please include the following details in the Note:

  • Degree/Diploma Programme (what are you currently studying or what have you studied?)
  • Graduation date (when will you graduate or when did you graduate from the programme?)
  • List of the IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in
  • List of your top three areas of interest (from areas indicated above).
  • Explanation of your interest in the internship and why you are the most suitable candidate.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Attending and summarizing meetings
  • Research and analytical work in the area assigned
  • Media monitoring and analysis of current events
  • Assistance in drafting and preparing documents

Eligibility

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate good written and oral communication skills.

This internship is provided to Pakistani nationals, US citizens of Pakistani origin- Senior High School, College and University students residing in the United States. (The Mission does not seek internships from Pakistani students residing or studying either in Pakistan or any other country due to administrative and visa issues).

Visas

Interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary visas. As per policy, the Mission does not facilitate issuance of visa(s) for internships for applicants who are in a country other than the United States.

Acceptable visa categories for internship with this Mission and registration with UN Protocol are US permanent residents, holders of F-1, J-1, J-2 and G-2 visas. Under US and UN regulations, B-1 and B-2 visa holders are not eligible for internships with any Missions accredited to the United Nations in New York.

Duration

The normal duration of an internship is for three to a maximum of six months. The Mission does not solicit internships that are less than two months. All internships must be for a minimum twenty (20) hours per week.

Interns are generally accepted for an initial three months and their tenure can be extended for an additional three months if the Mission sees that there is mutual value.

Documentation requirements

Copies of the following documents should be submitted to the Mission along with the application form. Incomplete applications forms will not be entertained.

  • One passport size photograph may be attached with the online application
  • Valid Pakistani Passport with valid visas as indicated above.
  • Valid US passport or Green Card along with Pakistani Passport or National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP). In case you don't have a Pakistani Passport or NICOP, a copy of your parents Pakistani Passport or NICOP may be provided to ascertain your Pakistani heritage.
  • In case of F-1 visa, copy of I-20 form and a letter of enrollment from college may be submitted along with clear indication of graduation date. For J-1 & J-2 visa holders are required to submit DS-2019 forms and enrollment/recommendation letter from college clearly indicating date of graduation. For G-2 visa holders, I-94 form is required.

Interview

After an initial review, the Mission calls in the short-listed candidates for interviews. Those selected for interview may please ensure that they either mail the filled-in application form along with necessary documentation before the interview or bring these documents at the time of interview.

Costs

The internship is accepted on a NO remuneration basis. All costs related to travel, medical insurance, accommodation in New York and living expenses are to be borne by the interns.

Academic Credits

You may get academic credit from your institution of higher education for the internship. Please check with your collage or university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.

Formal acceptance and notification

As the Mission has limited numbers of internship opportunities, these are accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis and a final decision on acceptance is based on review of applications, personal interviews and requirements of the Mission at a given time.

Selected candidates are notified through emails. The Mission maintains a roster of applicants including those who are not able to make it at a given timeframe. These candidates may be contacted by the Mission at a later stage.
