We have to "turbo charge" solidarity with the Kashmiri people: Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN

Today, the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to United Nations (New York) organized a webinar to mark the third year since India unilaterally and illegally initiate steps to annex occupied Jammu and Kashmir in what it called a "Final solution" for Kashmir, inducted 900,000 troops in the occupied territory.

The webinar was moderated by Ambassador Munir Akram, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to United Nations, where he delivered his opening and concluding remarks. H.E Prince Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Right, made keynote remarks.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Akram called the illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir as "the densest occupation in recent history saying "this massive Indian occupying force has perpetrated a vicious campaign of repressive actions, including extra-judicial killings of innocent Kashmiris in fake encounters; custodial killings and "cordon and search" operations; abduction and enforced disappearances.

Briefing the participants, Ambassador Akram noted that "a campaign of demographic change to transform the Muslim majority state of Jammu and Kashmir into a Hindu majority territory New "domicile rules" have been introduced and over 4.2 million fake domicile certificates issued to Hindus from all across India to settle in Kashmir".

"These measures undertaken by India since 5 August 2019 are blatant violations of international law, including the relevant UN Security Council resolutions: he said.

He underscored that India has tried to portray the Kashmiri freedom struggle as "terrorism". "Under international law the legitimate struggle of the Kashmiri people for their recognized right to self-determination cannot be legally or morally equated with terrorism" he stressed further. Ambassador Akram noted that "the onus is to create conditions for a dialogue to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is with India".

The Ambassadors from Member States and representative from Organization of Islamic Council (OIC) also shared their remarks in solidarity with the Kashmiri People.

Mr. Tofig F. Musayev, DPR of the Republic of Azerbaijan stated the principal position of Azerbaijan on Jammu and Kashmir that is based on the support for the peaceful resolution in accordance with the norms and principles of international law and the United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Representative from Permanent Mission of Turkiye, extended its support to Pakistan and the people of Kashmir in their in this important struggle, hoping that this grave human rights issue will produce the support of the international community.

Ms. Leyla Aslanova, Adviser to OIC Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations reiterates the OIC General Secretariat's call on the international community to increase its efforts to resolve the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The event featured other distinguished panelists including Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Secretary General Kashmir Awareness Forum, Ms. Mushaal Hussein Malik, wife of Mr. Yasin Malik, a Kashmiri leader, , Mr. Muzzamil Ayuub Thakur, Director of the Justice Foundation, and Ms. Danielle Khan, among others. The panelists called out the extremist "Hindutva' inspired RSS-BJP Indian government for denying the people of IIOJK their basic human rights through its long and cruel occupation which had brought unimaginable suffering to the Kashmiri people.
